Keep it flowing for years
An irrigation system rewards a little care with years of reliable, leak-free watering. Neglect it and you get clogs, leaks, and dry plants. Here's how to keep yours in top shape.
Check for clogs regularly
Drippers and nozzles clog over time, especially with hard water and dirt. Check that each one flows properly, and clean or replace any that are blocked. A filter at the tap greatly reduces clogging.
Flush the system periodically
Open the end of the main tubing and let water run through to flush out sediment and debris that build up inside. Do this every so often, especially after the dusty season.
Inspect for leaks
Walk the system and look for leaks at joints and connectors. Tighten or replace any leaking fittings — small leaks waste a surprising amount of water over time.
Clean the filter
If your system has a filter (it should), clean it regularly so it keeps debris out without restricting flow. A clogged filter weakens the whole system.
Protect tubing from sun and damage
India's strong sun degrades cheap tubing — UV-stabilised tubing lasts far longer. Keep tubing secured and out of the way of feet, mowers, and tools to avoid damage.
Adjust with the seasons
Plants need more water in summer and far less in the monsoon and cool months. Adjust your timer and flow accordingly so you don't over- or under-water as seasons change.
Check and replace the timer battery
If you use a tap timer, check its battery periodically so it doesn't fail and leave your garden unwatered (or the tap running). Replace it before long trips.
Store before long breaks
If you pause the system for a season, drain it, clean it, and store removable parts dry. It'll be ready and leak-free when you start again.
